Centrifuges according to ATEX guideline

10. September 2020

The term ATEX is an abbreviation and stands for “ATmosphère EXplosible”. Additionally, in technical jargon, ATEX stands for the short name of the European Directive 2014/34/EU, which describes the requirements for the placing on the market of explosion-proof electrical and mechanical equipment, components and protective systems.

An example for this is the Krettek classifying centrifuge type LAB-CUT® LC 1000. Among others, suspensions based on white spirit can be processed. This is how the evaluation of the installation environment was carried out according to EX II 2GD/3GD T4 <135°C.

Wherever dangerous explosive atmospheres may occur, so-called hazardous areas are defined and set up. For all Krettek centrifuges it is defined and evaluated together with the customer during the implementation and evaluation of the ATEX directive whether there is an explosion risk in the product area, outside the product area or even in working areas.

If the machine is installed in a potentially explosive area, but no potentially explosive product is centrifuged in the process area, only those components which are located in the installation area of the machine must be considered for ATEX certification (use of ATEX approved motors, operator panels, sensors etc.).

In case that the centrifuge is located in a non-Ex area, but an explosive product is centrifuged in the process area, all incoming and outgoing areas or pipes must be taken into account for ATEX certification (e.g. the installation of an inertisation system with integrated oxygen measurement is necessary).

ATEX-guideline

For each order, an FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) before commissioning is carried out together with the customer at the site in Viersen. During the review of the machine documentation, the risk analysis of the machine can be viewed as well. A deposit of the ATEX certification at a notified body (e.g. TÜV Nord, Dekra or PTB), considering the machine directive 2006/42/EG, is standard for the Krettek Separation GmbH.
